So you want to step on stage and drop a flawless three minute freestyle. It sounds huge, but it is totally doable if you break it down into smaller pieces.

Welcome back to YoYo Mastery. I am Kai, and over the years I have seen so many talented players freeze up when contest season hits. They have the tricks, but they do not have a solid set. Building a routine is a completely different skill than just learning combos in your bedroom. Here at YoYo Mastery, I always tell my students to treat routine building like a fun project. You just need a clear plan.

Let us walk through a simple thirty day blueprint to get your competition set ready. No stress, no crazy expectations, just steady daily progress.

## Week 1 Pick Your Best Tricks

The biggest mistake I see is trying to learn brand new tricks for a contest. Please do not do it. Contest pressure will make your hands shake and your mind race. You need tricks you can do in your sleep.

Grab your favorite yoyo and just play. Write down your top twenty combos. These should be the tricks you never miss, even when you are tired. At YoYo Mastery, we call these your anchor tricks. Make sure your string tension is perfectly dialed in before you start testing them.

### Sort by difficulty and style

Group your list into fast tricks, slow technical tricks, and big body moves. You want a really good mix to keep the judges interested. Pick about ten to twelve solid combos from this master list. That is all you need for a three minute set. Do not overstuff it with too many elements.

## Week 2 Connect the Dots

Now you have your tricks. The next step is making them flow together. A good routine at YoYo Mastery is never just a random list of tricks. It is a continuous stream of motion that looks effortless.

Look at your list. How do you get from trick A to trick B? You need smooth transition moves. Sometimes a simple trapeze brother into a double or nothing is all you need to reset your string. Try to use your off hand more during these transitions to make it look dynamic.

### Ditch the dead air

Watch yourself in a mirror or record a quick video on your phone. Are you stopping to fix your string? Are you walking back to the center of the stage after a walk the dog? Cut the dead air. If a transition feels clunky, change it. Keep the yoyo spinning and keep your body moving at all times.

## Week 3 Find Your Groove

You cannot build a YoYo Mastery approved set without the right music. The right track makes your tricks look twice as good and hides your minor mistakes.

Pick a song that matches your natural playing speed. If you play fast, get something upbeat and energetic. If you like smooth flowing tech, find a track with a steady relaxed groove. Avoid songs with weird time signatures that make counting beats difficult. Make sure the song is exactly three minutes long, or edit it on your computer so it is.

### Map the hits

Listen to the track on repeat while you drive or walk. Find the big beats, the heavy drops, and the quiet parts. Write down timestamps on a piece of paper. Match your biggest flashiest tricks to the loudest parts of the song. Put your slower more technical combos in the quieter sections. This makes your routine feel like it was made specifically for that exact song.

## Week 4 Build Stamina and Polish

This is where the real work happens. Playing for three minutes straight is actually exhausting. Your arms will burn, your fingers will get sore, and your brain will get tired. Remember to breathe deeply while you play.

Run your set from start to finish every single day this week. Do not stop when you mess up. In a real contest, you have to keep going no matter what. If you drop the yoyo, just pick it up and jump right back into the next trick.

### The dress rehearsal

By day twenty five, you should be running the set in your actual contest clothes. Wear the exact shoes you will wear on stage. Use the exact same yoyo and fresh string. Stand in the middle of your living room and pretend you are looking at the judges. Smile and make eye contact with the wall.

At YoYo Mastery, I always say that practice should feel much harder than the actual contest. If you can run your set perfectly in your living room while tired, the stage will feel incredibly easy.

Keep showing up. Keep spinning. You have got this.
