For light ragas or thumri — lighter touch. Maybe even instrumental tanpura. You want agility, not mass.

Electronic vs acoustic — the honest truth
Look, I love my acoustic tanpura. The wood breathes. The sound changes with the room. The jawari shifts as the temperature changes. It's alive. But I also keep a good electronic tanpura in my teaching room at Tanpura Tales.
Electronic tanpuras are consistent. They don't go out of tune when the AC kicks on. They're portable. You can practice at 11 PM without waking your neighbors. Some of the newer models — the Radel Maestro, the Sunadamala app — sound genuinely good. Not "good for electronic." Just good.
But they don't respond to you. An acoustic tanpura changes when you play louder. The strings vibrate sympathetically. You feel it in your fingers. That feedback loop teaches you things no electronic can.
My rule: acoustic for serious practice and performance. Electronic for travel, late night, and when you just need a reliable sa. Don't feel guilty about using electronic. Feel guilty about not practicing.

They treat the tanpura like a metronome — turn it on, ignore it. Wrong. The tanpura is your reference. Treat it like one.

A few things nobody tells you
The strings matter. A lot. Cheap strings sound dead. Good strings — like the ones from Miraj or Calcutta — sing. They hold tuning longer. They respond to jawari changes. Spend the extra money. Your ears will thank you.
The bridge matters too. Bone bridges sound different from ivory alternatives sound different from wood. If you're buying used, check the bridge wear. A worn bridge gives you a fuzzy, uncontrolled buzz. You can't fix that with thread adjustment.
Position the tanpura right. On your lap, angled slightly away. Not flat on the floor. Not clamped to your shoulder. You want the sound to project toward you, not into your thigh.
