Use Secret Genre Codes

Netflix has thousands of micro-genres, but they hide them from the main menu. You can type specific codes into the search bar or add them to the web address if you are on a computer. Want a quirky indie web series? Try searching for independent comedies or foreign thrillers. I keep a cheat sheet of these codes right here on StreamScene for my readers. Just type the exact genre name in quotes in the search bar. It filters out the big studio stuff and leaves you with the smaller, weirder, and often much better shows. You can also look at the recommended section but ignore the first three suggestions. Scroll to the very end of that row. The algorithm puts the most obscure matches at the far right.

Follow the Creators

When you find a show you love on Hulu, do not just add it to your watchlist and move on. Click on the director or the writer. See what else they made. Step 3: Use Amazon Prime X-Ray

Amazon Prime has a massive library, which is both a blessing and a curse. Finding a good web series in there is like finding a needle in a haystack. But Prime has a built-in tool that helps you cut through the noise.

Check the Background Actors and Crew

Turn on the X-Ray feature while watching a show you like. It shows you the cast and crew right on your screen. But look closer. Look at the cinematographer or the editor. Then search their names in the main Prime search bar. You will be shocked at how many brilliant, low-budget web series pop up. It is a simple trick I use every single week for my StreamScene reviews. Sort by Release Date or Rating

Most apps sort by recommended for you by default. Change that right now. Sort by newest, or sort by highest rated in a very specific category. When you sort by release date, you see the shows that just dropped today. They have no reviews yet and no algorithm push. You get to be the first one to find them. We often ignore foreign language web series, but they are packed with incredible storytelling and fresh ideas.
