Finished a mix but unsure if it’s ready? Use this **mastering checklist** to guarantee your track translates perfectly on any speaker.

## Mastering Checklist: The 12 Steps

1. **Listen on cheap speakers** – Play your mix on the worst speaker you own; if vocals, kick, and snare still come through, you’re on the right track.  
2. **Check the mono compatibility** – Switch to mono and make sure nothing disappears; a vanished guitar or synth signals phase issues to fix.  
3. **Look at the peak levels** – Ensure your loudest peaks stay under **-1 dBTP** to leave headroom for the limiter later.  
4. **Sweep the low end** – Apply a high‑pass filter on non‑bass instruments to clear mud below **30 Hz**, tightening the kick and bass.  
5. **Balance the stereo width** – Pan elements gently; keep bass, kick, and vocals centered while widening stereo to enhance, not distract.  
6. **Fix any harsh frequencies** – Sweep a narrow boost around **2‑5 kHz** and cut if it hurts your ears; a small reduction goes a long way.  
7. **Add subtle saturation** – A touch of tape or tube warmth can glue the mix together without sounding distorted.  
8. **Check the loudness** – Use a LUFS meter and target around **-14 LUFS** for streaming platforms; adjust gain before limiting.  
9. **Apply gentle compression** – If the mix feels uneven, a light bus compressor with a low ratio (**1.5:1**) smooths things out.  
10. **Set the final limiter** – Place a limiter on the master bus, set the ceiling to **-0.3 dBTP**, and push gain until you hit your LUFS target; watch for pumping.  
11. **Listen on multiple devices** – Test on headphones, car speakers, phone earbuds, and a home stereo; take notes on what changes.  
12. **Add fades and export** – Fade in the first **10 ms** and fade out the last **50 ms** to avoid clicks, then export as a 24‑bit WAV (or preferred format) and do a final listen.

Each step is a single action; checking them in order prevents overwhelm and catches details you’d otherwise miss.
