Reverse-Engineer a Vintage Radio to Create a Modern Bluetooth Speaker

Today on Deconstruct & Rebuild, we are tackling a really fun project. We are going to turn a vintage radio into a fully functional Bluetooth speaker. It looks totally retro, but it streams your favorite playlists right from your phone.
Why Bother Upcycling an Old Radio?
Vintage radios have beautiful wooden cabinets and cool fabric grilles. Modern plastic speakers just do not have the same charm or character. Plus, taking apart old electronics is exactly what we do here at Deconstruct & Rebuild. It is a great way to learn how things were built decades ago. You get to appreciate the old craftsmanship while giving a neat piece of history a second life in your home.
What You Will Need
Keep your parts list simple. You do not need a massive workshop or expensive gear to pull this off. Just grab the basics.
- A vintage radio (check thrift stores or garage sales for cheap ones with nice wood).
- A basic Bluetooth amplifier board (you can find these online for just a few bucks).
- Two small full range speakers. Measure the inside of your radio first so you know what size will actually fit.
- Soldering iron, some rosin core solder, and a helping hand tool.
- Basic hand tools like screwdrivers, wire strippers, and a multimeter.
- A rechargeable lithium battery pack or a simple 12V power adapter.
Step 1: Gutting the Vintage Radio
First things first. Open up the back of the radio. You will probably see a mess of old cloth wrapped wires, glass tubes, and a really heavy transformer. Carefully snip the wires and remove all the internal guts.
Keep the original speaker cone if you want to reuse the front fabric grille, but toss the heavy electronic components. We just want an empty wooden shell. Save any cool metal knobs or dials on the front panel. Preserving the outside look is the whole spirit of Deconstruct & Rebuild. Keep the outside looking completely authentic.
Step 2: Prepping the Enclosure
Look at the empty space inside the wooden box. You need to figure out where your new speakers and the Bluetooth board will go. If the original speaker holes in the wood are too small, use a drill to widen them just a bit.
Make sure your new speakers sit flush against the front grille. Mount them using small wood screws or a dab of hot glue. Just make sure they are tightly secured so they do not rattle when the bass kicks in. A rattle will ruin the whole vibe.
Step 3: Wiring the Bluetooth Amp
This is where the magic happens. Take your Bluetooth amplifier board and place it somewhere safe inside the cabinet. Wire the positive and negative outputs from the board to your new left and right speakers. Double check your polarity so they push air in the same direction.
If your board has a battery input, wire that up to your lithium pack. If you prefer to keep it plugged in, wire the power adapter directly to the board. Make sure the voltage matches what the board needs. Use your soldering iron to make clean and strong connections. Wrap any exposed metal wires in heat shrink tubing or electrical tape so nothing shorts out and ruins your hard work.
A Quick Tip on Speaker Placement
Try to space your two new speakers as far apart inside the cabinet as you can. This gives you a much better stereo effect. If you cram them right next to each other, it will just sound like flat mono audio. Give them some room to breathe.
Step 4: Reassembling and Testing
Before you screw the back panel on tight, do a quick test. Pair your phone to the Bluetooth board and play a song you know really well. Listen closely for any buzzing, cracking, or rattling.
If it sounds good, you are in the clear. Screw the back panel back onto the radio. You can actually use the original volume knob to hide your charging port or power switch if you want to get really creative with the design.
