When you first set up a planted tank, the water looks crystal clear, the leaves are perky, and then—out of nowhere—yellow tips or a slimy algae film appear. Most of us point the finger at light or substrate, but the real troublemaker is often hiding in the water chemistry: pH and KH. Getting those two to play nice can turn a struggling carpet into a lush underwater forest.

## Why pH and KH Matter

### What is pH?

pH tells us how acidic or alkaline the water is, on a scale from 0 (super acidic) to 14 (very alkaline), with 7 sitting right in the middle as neutral. Most freshwater plants feel happiest between 6.5 and 7.5. If the pH drops too low, leaf tips start to brown; if it climbs too high, delicate species can wilt or melt away.

### What is KH?

KH, or carbonate hardness, measures how well the water resists pH swings. Think of it as a shock absorber for the pH roller‑coaster. Low KH means the pH can jump wildly after a water change or a dose of fertilizer. High KH keeps the pH steady, but it can also make it tougher to lower a high pH when you need to.

### How They Work Together

You can have a low pH with a high KH (acidic but stable) or a high pH with a low KH (alkaline and jumpy). For most planted tanks we aim for a stable pH in the plant‑friendly range, backed by enough KH to keep it from bouncing around after every little change.

## Testing Your Water

Before you start adding anything, you need a baseline. Grab a reliable liquid test kit (or a drop‑per kit—both are cheap and easy). Test at the same time each week, preferably a few hours after the lights go off, so photosynthesis isn’t skewing the numbers. Jot the results in a notebook or a phone note; patterns will start to show up faster than you expect.

## Setting Your Targets

3. **Pick a buffer level.** For beginners, a KH of 3–5 dKH gives enough stability without locking the pH in place.

## Raising KH (When It’s Too Low)

If your test shows KH below 3 dKH, you’ll notice the pH wobbling after each water change. Here are three gentle ways to nudge it up:

- **Crushed coral sand.** Sprinkle a thin layer (about a quarter inch) onto the substrate. It slowly releases calcium carbonate, lifting KH over time.  
- **Aragonite gravel.** Similar to coral sand but with bigger pieces; it raises KH while adding a natural, beach‑y look.  
- **Commercial buffers.** Products like Seachem Alkaline Buffer let you add a measured dose each week. Follow the label—more isn’t always better, and over‑buffering can make pH adjustments tough.

## Lowering KH (When It’s Too High)

Hard tap water loaded with limestone can push KH up, making pH stubbornly high. Lowering KH is a bit trickier because you’re removing that buffer, but it can be done safely:

- **Reverse osmosis (RO) water.** Mix RO with your tap water to dilute the carbonate hardness. A 30 % RO blend often drops KH into the 2–3 dKH range.  
- **Peat moss.** Toss a small bag of peat into your filter media. It releases humic acids that gently pull both KH and pH down; the water will take on a light tea hue—just keep an eye on it.  
- **Driftwood.** Natural driftwood leaches tannins that act like peat, softening the water over weeks while also giving your scape a cool, organic vibe.

## Fine‑Tuning pH

Once KH is in the sweet spot, adjusting pH becomes a lot smoother.

### To Raise pH

- **Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).** Dissolve a tiny pinch in a cup of tank water and pour it in slowly. One teaspoon per 20 gallons nudges pH up about 0.1–0.2, but only if KH is already decent.  
- **Lime or crushed coral.** Adding a bit to your filter works slowly, which is perfect for avoiding shock.

### To Lower pH

- **CO₂ injection.** If you’re already running CO₂ for plant growth, you’ll notice a natural pH dip during the light period—no extra chemicals needed.  
- **Driftwood or peat.** As mentioned, these release mild acids that gently pull pH lower.  
- **Very dilute vinegar.** A few drops of pure white vinegar mixed into a small volume of RO water can tweak pH down quickly. Use this only for tiny adjustments; big swings can stress fish and plants.

## A Simple Weekly Routine

1. **Test pH and KH together.**  
2. **Do a 20 % water change** using a mix of tap and RO water that hits your target KH.

## My First Tank Lesson

When I set up my first 20‑gallon “jungle” tank three years ago, I was obsessed with getting the perfect lighting. I barely glanced at the water chemistry.
