How to Nail a Cellular Acrylic Pour Every Time (No Fancy Gear Needed)

What Even Are Cells?

If you are new to acrylic pouring, cells are those round, floating circles that form when different colors push against each other. They look like little bubbles or islands in your paint. Some people call them lacing or rings. Whatever you call them, they make a painting look alive.

Cells happen because of density and chemistry. Basically, one paint is heavier than another, and when you add something like silicone or oil, it creates tension between the layers. The lighter paint tries to rise, and that movement creates those rings we all love.

The Supplies That Actually Matter

I have tested a lot of stuff over the years so you do not have to. Here is what I use at Acrylic Flow Studio for consistent cells:

  • Floetrol - This is my go-to pouring medium. It is cheap, works great, and gives nice cells.
  • Silicone oil - You only need a drop or two. Too much will ruin your painting. I use treadmill oil because it is cheap and works the same as the art store stuff.
  • Good craft paint - You do not need artist grade paint for cells. Craft paints like Apple Barrel or DecoArt work fine. Just make sure they are not too thin already.
  • Torch - A kitchen torch or even a lighter works. But be careful, obviously.

How to Mix Your Paint for Maximum Cells

This is where most people mess up. They mix their paint too thin or too thick, and then wonder why nothing happens.

Here is my simple formula that works every time:

Mix one part paint with two parts Floetrol. Add a tiny splash of water if it looks too thick, but not too much. You want the paint to flow like warm honey. If it drips off your stir stick like water, it is too thin.

For the colors you want to make cells, add one tiny drop of silicone oil per cup of mixed paint. Stir it very gently. If you stir too hard, you will break the silicone into tiny bubbles that do nothing. Just fold it in a few times.

The Pouring Method That Works Best

There are lots of ways to pour, but for consistent cells, I always go with the dirty cup or flip cup method.

Put your colors in one cup, layering them however you want. Pour a thin layer of white or black on your canvas first. Then flip your cup onto the canvas and lift it slow. Tilt the canvas to let the paint run where you want.

The key is not to overwork it. Once you tilt, stop. Too much movement kills cells.

The Torch Trick

After you pour, let the paint sit for maybe 30 seconds. Then hit it with your torch. Hold the torch about 6 inches away and wave it back and forth. Do not hold it in one spot.

You will see the cells pop up almost instantly. The heat makes the silicone rise and push through the paint. It is honestly one of the most satisfying things in the world.

Why Your Cells Are Not Showing Up

If you try this and still get nothing, here are the usual problems:

  • Your paint is too thin - Thicker paint holds cells better.
  • Not enough silicone - Add another tiny drop and mix even gentler.
  • Too much torch - You can actually burn the silicone and kill the cells.
  • Overmixing - Seriously, stir like you are scared to wake the paint up.

I had a painting last week where I got zero cells because I was rushing. I added the silicone, stirred it like crazy, and poured it. Nothing. Just a flat mess. So I learned my lesson again.

A Few Things I Wish Someone Told Me
